When facing an impending expansion there are many daunting questions that run through your mind immediately. In this blog post I will try and simplify those questions into what I thought during times of expansions in my career.
Meeting the needs and exceeding the expectations your customer base is a top priority when facing the decision of weather or not to expand your facility. This was an integral part in my decision-making process when I oversaw the construction of the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta GA, and each of the four distinct expansions that happened during my tenure as GM of the Georgia World Congress Center. Now every expansion is not going to be the largest one ever conducted so another important question to ask yourself is how does your facility compare to your competitors? It is very important to keep upgrading your venue to be ahead of the current market, giving customers reasons to utilize our facility.
Once you get the expansion approved the next big step is keeping your customers informed about what is happing and how it will affect them, as well as creating excitement about what is coming in the future. Clear communication is needed so that you do not surprise them with a construction site for a tradeshow floor. Always be willing to accommodate when special requests arise, because maintaining a positive relationship with your customer base is what makes people successful in this industry.
There are many more details that go into the decision of this magnitude. But the main concepts I want you to think about initially are: Are you at least up to date with the market? Do you offer something unique in your facility? Are your current clients clamoring to some back? Is your community ready to partner with you for the expansion? And can you still give top tier services to your clients during construction?
Here are some current exciting expansions going on that I was excited to read about!
